quincey was just getting over a cold when we left for christmas in seattle. which is no big deal, except that after christmas she got a fever...that didn't go away. poor girl. i've never seen her sleep so much since she was a newborn. she didn't eat much, she just wanted to sleep or be held.
finally on the 3rd day of her fever we had to do something about it. of course there are some issues:
1) we were out of town
2) insurance would cover it, IF it was an emergency
3) we were suppose to leave seattle the next day
4) it's new year's eve
so for reason #2, my mom and i took her to the ER. they checked it out. tested her for the flu (negative), and took x-rays of her chest. on the 4th try they finally got the IV in her left hand. she had good veins on her right hand and arm, but since she's a thumb sucker... they were kind enough to not use that arm at all. after that, she fell right to sleep. while she was asleep she was giving a breathing treatment to help her breathe easier. they also had to take a urine sample. they diagnosed her with bronchiolitis and a double ear infection. since her oxygen levels were at about 90% when she was awake, they wanted to admit her to the hospital. knowing that her oxygen would dip down into the low 80's when she was asleep, they wanted to watch her overnight. oh nice.
andrew came to the hospital as soon as he was home from snowboarding. quincey was awake when he walked in the door. she was so happy to see her dad! she reached out for him to hold her. they moved us up to the 2nd floor and into the pediatrics dept. and into this lovely bed/crib. because she had a respiratory infection, anyone who entered the room was at least masked. the sides of her crib go up and the tops come down, as you can see at the head and foot.
during all of this, sterling was home and looked after by my dad and sisters. as far as i can remember, he was good. my dad brought us dinner at about 9 that night. andrew stayed for a bit and then left to go put sterling to bed. i stayed with quincey and slept on the "couch". it wasn't that bad, though i could feel the cold from the window and the beeping from quincey's machines. they finally turned the beeping off, but i still woke up just about every time they came in.
she slept pretty well. she really didn't move around much. she also held on to her clothie and sucked her thumb a lot.
here's her IV. when she woke up and found this attached to her arm, she did not like it at all. she did come to accept it though. you can see one of the attempts for her IV above as well. since she was getting about an once an hour, she woke up on new years quite swollen.
she was swollen enough that she had to get a new anti-theft band. you can't see it here, but it's under her blood pressure cuff.
we took her home later afternoon of january 1, 2013. we left the next day. it was a wed. one day later than we wanted to leave. andrew had gotten the day off because of the circumstances. they gave us an inhaler to use for her cough. i had to take her into the doctor on thurs for a check up. she was still doing well and hadn't lost any weight.
she has recovered well, though she seems skinner than before she got sick. i'm not sure if this is because of the sickness or because she is growing and losing her baby fat.
