sterling's fracture and memorial day

if i had known on mother's day, that having sterling outside would've brought me 3 weeks of misery. i would've had them stay inside. (ok, maybe it hasn't all be that miserable, but it hasn't been fun either)

so sterling and andrew went outside to play. he was in the swing and andrew was giving him under doggies. the thought sterling would find it funny if he laid down and sterling would swing over him. it was fun, until he got his leg caught. he came in crying and i was on the phone with mary. i figured that he could wait until i was done, since i didn't see any blood.

anyway, he wouldn't put any weight on his left leg. we thought it was his ankle (but we were wrong). we turned on the jungle book, meds and iced his leg. then we put him to bed. he still wouldn't put any weight on it. even thought my kid care book said 24 hours, i called and got him an appt to go in that day. they just put him in a stint and then we had an appt for the next day (tues the 10th) in polson to get xrays. they decided to leave him in his stint for another week and then come back and see the orthopedic surgeon.

the two above pictures are from may 9th. we got home and (i think) he fell asleep while watching a show. anyway, i was holding him and then he fell asleep, so i laid him down so i could take some pictures. it didn't take long for him to get it all dirty and stinky.

as you can see, the stint only slowed him down. of course it was nice out, finally, so he enjoyed crawling around outside after kitty. he got to the point where he could even hobble around on it, but crawling was sometimes faster.

i had changed sterling's follow up appt from may 19th to may 16th. i'm so glad that i had done that come sunday night (may 15). that night, sterling would not go to sleep. we gave him meds but since he had been on and off them all week, we didn't think they were helping much. we called st. joe's hospital to talk with a nurse and she said that i could bring him in, but there wasn't really anything more that they could do for him. just pain management. so i'm not sure what was bothering him, but we didn't get much sleep last night. andrew got some, but i stayed up with sterling. it was like having a colicky baby. even new spongebob didn't settle him down for long. he would be fine and then he would start crying. he just wanted to be held.

on the bright side, i found out that there aren't a lot of people out on hwy 93 at 3 in the morning.

monday morning came and we got ready for his appt. i think we did get some good sleep before his appt. anyway, the orthopedic surgeon decided that sterling didn't need the stint anymore. he was almost all the way healed. sterling still wouldn't put any weight on it and then when the dr touched sterling's leg, he didn't like it. so in order to protect him from re-injury or to protect him from himself, he put sterling in a hard cast for 2 weeks.

sterling with his pretty green cast. we did a good job of keeping it dry until memorial day weekend. it was annoying to have to give him sponge bath, but i think i only did it 3 times. sterling was scheduled to get his cast off on may 31. since that is just after memorial day weekend, all of our plans were pretty much cancelled. his cast and the rain that came off and on. we wanted to go camping in glacier, but it was going to be muddy and cold. they still had a lot of snow up there. so we ended up just hanging out at home.

sterling is suppose to be waking up from his nap.

on saturday may 28, sterling helped andrew wash the raptor and that's were he got it wet. when they started mentioned to andrew that he should have a bag on his cast. so he came in and got one on. he didn't like it at first, but he got over it. we also went up to the dam with the raft. that was fun. sterling even kept his life jacket on. we're not sure if it was just because he's older or if it's because we also had them on too. i had also gone to polson to garage sales and scored a lot of girl clothes. i also found some movies and sandels for sterling.

on memorial day we went over to the leishman's so that sterling and jason could play. i had just planned on a play date, but we ended up staying most of the day. we went to the honor ceremony at the catholic cemetery that landry's scout troop was a part of. then we just hung out at the leishman's and we had a picnic. we made homemade s'more ice cream. the boys had a good time playing together and had a good holiday.

on tues, may 31 sterling got his cast off. he was good, most of the time while joel (the othro nurse) cut it the saw. i think that he was happy to have it off. i noticed that he walked like he still had a cast on and when he would run, he would stick it out to the side. but since he's had it in the same position for 3 weeks, we figured that we would give him a week to see  how he did. and if it was still a problem, i would take him back in.

Ohh poor boy! I bet that is intense since he is used to being so mobile, especially for you being pregnant! How long does he have to wear the cast?
