hawaii day 3 USS Missouri and Paul's

we didn't get up early anymore, well not at 4 am anyway! we normally got up about 6 or 6.30. this day we didn't get up until about 7! we were going to spend the day in the city. (again right across the island form where we where!)

we went the Pearl Harbor. per the recommendation of a local(paul) we just went to the USS Missouri.

the shuttle was filled up just a few people before us so we had to wait. andrew is reading about Pearl Harbor.

here Mighty Mo as they call it. USS Missouri BB-36. it was the 36th (and last) battle ship ever made.

on the left you can see the original teak floor. on the right is the new floor. they are in the process of replacing it. they said it should last 70 years.

the USS Missouri is where Japan signed the surrender documents. out tour was suppose to be about 30 mins but it was about hour, we are sure. that is a long to stand in the sun. it was mighty hot that day. whew! i could not wait to get into the water!

the view to the west

these large guns could hit a target that was about 20 miles away. you can also see the memorial to the USS Arizona in front of the ship. (the white building)

from here we went and had lunch at a place that paul recommended, En Fuego in kapolei. it took us longer than i thought to there but we finally arrived and the food was excellent. andrew's shrimp scampi was good! if he has taken longer in the bathroom, he might have not had any left!

we went to our family friends house, Paul and his son, K in ewa (pronouced eva) beach we got there not too long after he got home from school. we hung out and visited while he finished some of his homework then we walked out to the beach. seriously, it's right there. you can see the waves really well from their windows. i don't have any pictures of our time there. sorry! if we had more time, i would have returned!

K and i boogie boarded, andrew surfed and paul kayaked. it's a lot of work to get out past the waves. you have to learn which ones you can "jump" and keep paddling and which ones are gonna take you to shore. the salt water burned our eyes and was a taste we couldn't get used to. we sat on the beach visiting for a long time too. we picked up an shells that looked interesting. i was digging in the sand and something was tickling my hand. i kept digging for some reason and as i freaked out and pulled my hand out a crab came out too! that's the 2nd time they have startled me! gives me to the creeps to think about the feeling of the crab legs on my hand.

after playing in the water with K for a long time, we got cleaned up (washed all the salt water off) and headed to dinner. we ate at Hapa Grill. we had fried calamari. andrew had pork and cabbage and i had a bacon burger with garlic fries. these fries were drenched in garlic. you could see it from across the table. my mother would be so happy with them. best part of the meal. after wards we had dessert at cookie corner. the cookies looked over done and i was a little disappointed, but they were wonderful. they were still soft in the middle. then i remembered that my mom had warned us about that.

once we got back it was late. ok, it felt late. because it gets dark at 7. paul offered to let us spend the night. i thought about it but we didn't an over night bag plus we needed to wash our laundry. so we left and got home about 9.30. we were worn out and i had to drive home some of the way because andrew couldn't stay awake.

we drove home the slightly longer way, going north from ewa beach on H2 and then east. since it was dark there wasn't much to see but it was nice not to drive through the city of Honolulu again!
