cake decorating

spring semester 2009 i took a cake decorating class. i enjoyed the class, though it was stressful and a lot of work. here's my work starting at the beginning and ending with my final cake.

for extra credit, we could make a cake (i did cupcakes because they are easier to get rid of) and decorate it. this was even before the class started. it gave me time to practice a little with my tips. basket weave on cupcakes looks really cool. there is another picture of a cake that we did in class, but i can't find it. we ate about half of that cake and the other half went to work with andrew.

this is my 1st service cake.

this is the next cake that i got to bring home. we had to so some math in order to evenly divide the top. i know these aren't good pictures. but the yellow is done with the star tip. the green is vines that connect the flowers and they have leaves.

close up of the stars, vines and wild roses. we ate a slice or two of this one.
a small practice cake. the only cake that i didn't actually bake. our teacher did them for us. we worked with edible paper, which is the flower looking thing in the middle. we didn't eat this one either.
royal icing. this project was fun to do, but with buttercream icing the royal icing turned colors. royal icing is what those hard, but very light candy things you can buy to put on your cake. to make the tools and ASE symbol; i printed out pictures, cover them with wax paper and then outlined and filled them in with the icing. for flowers, i made them just as i would with buttercream, only i did them on wax paper so they could dry.

primroses, wild roses and drop star flowers.

4th of july weekend we were in utah and i had a service cake due when i got back. meaning i had to do it there. brother in laws are good at eating things you don't want around. the ones that i used the big swirl tip on got eaten first.

there's the final. finally! it had to be two tiers. since i had been doing 8'' rounds all semester, i decided to use 6'' and 9'' rounds. the figures are royal icing. the cake is covered in fondant (i'm missing my fondant cake). it was very last minute and didn't turn out like i wanted. it's ok. i wasn't the only one who's was done last minute. (i just put this on in the dumpster, i didn't see any cracks in it.... but i wasn't about to climb in there to look either)
i'm glad the semester is over and that i can stay at home all day if i want to.
